iPhone 13 production not to face iPhone 12-like delays: Report

Famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that the next generation iPhone 13 mass production will be as per schedule, without any delay like this year.

According to him, if the iPhone 13 production starts in summer next year, then Apple will launch the next-generation iPhones in September, following its usual release time frame.

Apple usually begins mass production of iPhones in early summer, but iPhone 12 models got delayed due to Covid-19 related lockdown and travel restrictions, hindering the production process.

Kuo denied the concerns regarding Apple supplier TSMC’s capacity utilisation being dropped to 80 per cent from 100 per cent for the A14 chips in the first quarter of 2021, reports MacRumors.

The analyst noted that this is more of a seasonality factor rather than a capacity utilisation aspect.

iPhone 13 is expected to come in the same four model sizes as this year’s iPhone 12, but with some major improvements to the camera technology.

The Ultra Wide cameras on the two high-end models will be significantly upgraded to f/1.8, 6P (six-element lens) with autofocus.

All the current iPhone 12 models are equipped with f/2.4, 5P (five-element lens) Ultra Wide cameras with fixed focus.

Reddit to buy short-video platform Dubsmash for undisclosed sum

Social network firm Reddit said https://redditblog.com/2020/12/13/reddit-welcomes-video-platform-dubsmash-to-team on Sunday it would buy short-video platform Dubsmash, becoming the latest company to expand in a space dominated by Chinese-owned TikTok.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but a spokeswoman for Reddit said the acquisition was based on a combination of cash and stock.

The success of ByteDance’s TikTok has prompted many social media companies to add short-video services to their platforms, with Snapchat Inc rolling out “Spotlight” in November and Facebook Inc launching “Instagram Reels” earlier this year.

Reddit said in a blog post that the deal would give its users, who can already upload and stream videos, access to Dubsmash’s editing and short-video creation tools.

The San Francisco-based company added that Dubsmash would maintain its own platform and brand.

Dubsmash’s entire team, including co-founders Suchit Dash, Jonas Drüppel and Tim Specht, will join Reddit.

Ericsson claims Samsung violated contractual commitments on 5G

Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson has accused Samsung of violating contractual commitments by failing to adhere to various licensing patent agreements ranging from 2G to 5G.

In a lawsuit filed at District Court in Texas in the US, Ericsson alleged that the South Korean tech giant failed to adhere to the fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms and conditions.

Samsung’s FRAND commitment is a contract between Samsung and European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Ericsson claimed in the complaint.

“The application of the FRAND commitment in this instance is in relation to various global cross-licences that cover both parties’ patents for 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G cellular standards,” reports ZDNet.

“Samsung’s breach has caused Ericsson to suffer actual damages, such as Ericsson’s costs and expenses in pursuing futile negotiations with Samsung in an amount to be determined at trial. In addition, Ericsson is further entitled to obtain specific performance under French law,” the lawsuit read.

Samsung was yet to react on the Ericsson lawsuit.

The Swedish company said it is seeking to attain a declaration that it has complied with its FRAND commitment, and that Samsung has not.

With several of the licensing deals set to expire next year and negotiations still ongoing, Ericsson said the payment of IP royalties may be delayed.

Trai secy hopes 5G will be introduced in India soon, sees viable use cases

The fifth-generation technology promises sufficient India-specific use cases along with viable and affordable business models, Trai Secretary said on Thursday while expressing hope that 5G will be introduced in the Indian market very soon.

On the issue of spectrum pricing, which has time and again been flagged by players as expensive, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) Secretary SK Gupta emphasised that the regulator has made all-out efforts to ensure that price of radiowaves is “reasonable and market-friendly”.

Gupta further asserted that global comparisons, in this regard, should be done only on equitable parameters taking, into account various variables and future prospects.

Speaking at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2020, Gupta said Trai has already given its recommendation for the auction of spectrum in 3,300-3,600 MHz bands, which is under the telecom department’s consideration, and hoped that auctions would be conducted “soon”.

Identification of spectrum in millimeterWave band is important to roll out 5G services, he said, adding that Trai hoped to get the reference (from the DoT) on the matter.

“I feel 5G is a gamechanger, has sufficient India-specific use case, provides viable and affordable business models and I am very optimistic and hope that 5G will be introduced in Indian market very soon,” Gupta said.

Japan races to catch up to Huawei in 5G tech after Trump crackdown on China

When Japan invented the world’s first camera-equipped mobile phone two decades ago, it signaled an early but crucial step in the transformation of the phone into a sophisticated high-speed wireless information terminal.

Two decades later, as the world develops 5G networks that are tens of thousands of times faster, the nation that pioneered many of these technologies has been almost entirely absent. Having lost the lead in consumer-facing handsets after missing the shift to smartphones, Japanese brands have also fallen behind Nokia Oyj, Ericsson AB and above all Huawei Technologies Co. in the buildout of 5G infrastructure.

Those three manufacturers control almost 80% of 5G base-station market share, according to research company TrendForce. But Japanese firms have been handed an unexpected lifeline by the U.S.-led crackdown on Huawei, the Chinese company that was at the forefront of the technology’s rollout. With U.S. partners seeking out suppliers from friendlier nations, vendors in close U.S. ally Japan suddenly seem a lot more attractive to carriers around the world racing to upgrade their networks.

“It’s given us a chance,” Jun Sawada, chief executive officer of Japan’s telecommunications behemoth Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp., also known as NTT, said of the U.S. steps to remove Huawei.

Sony A8H OLED 4K Android TV review: A tech-rich smart TV worth your money

Sony has a history of making technology-rich televisions, and the legacy continues with the Bravia A8H OLED 4K Android smart television. Though not the company’s top-end offering, the Bravia A8H is a premium model in the Japanese electronics maker’s OLED smart TV portfolio in India. Except the 8K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate available on the LED-based Bravia Z8H series, the Bravia A8H does not lack any of the Sony’s premium technology and features. On paper, the Sony Bravia A8H OLED 4K Android TV seems to be a tech-rich smart TV worth your money. But is it? Let’s find out:

Design

The Bravia A8H OLED 4K Android TV is based on Sony’s ‘One Slate’ design concept. It seems carved from a single piece of metal, with vivid 65-inch OLED screen dominating the entire front profile and a plush design on the back. The TV has a thin waistline, but there is a small block-shaped protrusion on the rear side where most of its machinery is placed. Nonetheless, the protrusion is not an obstruction and the Bravia A8H looks uniform on all angles.

Though thin, the TV is heavy (21.8 kg) and requires installation to be done by professionals. It is not the kind of TV that you can move from one room to another without seeking professional installation service. And, it is best used with table-top installation, not wall mount. The TV comes with a flexible metal blade stand which lets you adjust its height to accommodate soundbar in front of the TV without obstructing the view.
