PV Sindhu creates history, wins badminton world championship gold

P V Sindhu

P V Sindhu on Sunday became the first Indian to win badminton World Championships gold by beating familiar rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in a lop-sided final Basel on Sunday.

The Indian won 21-7 21-7 in the summit clash that lasted just 38 minutes.

Two years after being robbed off the gold by Okuhara in an epic 110-minute final at Glasgow that went down as one of the greatest battles in badminton history, Sindhu finally exorcised the ghost of that heart-wrenching loss with a completely dominating win over the same opponent.

It was Sindhu’s fifth World Championships medal — joint most for a woman singles player with former Olympics and world champion Zhang Ning of China — to go with the two successive silvers and a couple of bronze medals. Read Complete Article

ISRO tech to detect illegal sand mining, augment water in forests: Govt

ISRO Satellite

Plans are afoot to detect illegal sand-mining across the country with the help of ISRO satellites and also augment water and fodder in forest areas to prevent man-animal conflict, Union Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar said Saturday.

The government plans to use satellite image technology by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) to map every area and river to check illegal sand-mining. Javadekar said this to reporters at Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology (SACON), near here.

“With the help of ISRO technology, we will know where the sand is deposited and the government could auction it, thereby the mafia is avoided and a sustainable sand-mining will be in place,” he said in response to a question on sand-mining, which has become a major challenge. To another question on increasing man-human conflict due to encroachment of forest area, particularly elephant corridor and not abiding by HACA (Hill Area Conservation Authority) rules in Western Ghats, Javdekar said the farmers had told him that unless enough water and fodder was provided, the conflict would continue. Read Complete Article

Google ditches its desserts! Android Q’s official name is Android 10

New Version Android 10

Breaking the 10-year history of naming Android releases after desserts, Google on Thursday announced it had officially named the next version as just Android 10.

“First, we’re changing the way we name our releases. Our engineering team has always used internal code names for each version, based of tasty treats, or desserts, in alphabetical order,” said Sameer Samat, VP of Product Management, Android, in a statement. The naming tradition has become a fun part of the release each year externally too, like Android Lollipop or Marshmallows. New Android 10

“As a global operating system, it’s important that these names are clear and relatable for everyone in the world. So, this next release of Android will simply use the version number and be called Android 10,” Samat explained.

“While there were many tempting ‘Q’ desserts out there, we think that at version 10 and 2.5 billion active devices, it was time to make this change,” he added.

Here’s Ranveer Singh proving ‘it’s all good in the hood’

Ranveer Singh

If you had a bad day or are dealing with one, here’s Ranveer Singh proving that

it’s all good in the hood“.

The actor is well known for his peculiar fashion style and it seems like his childhood was no different. Ranveer, on Thursday, pinned a picture of his younger self clad in a red jumpsuit with a hood where he is seen signaling a thumbs-up gesture.

Little Ranveer even had a picture of his on the wall behind him. Actor Varun Dhawan was quick to comment, “Ballers”.

Rapper Kaambhaari, who worked with Ranveer on his music label, also commented on the picture and wrote, “Cutie” along with a heart emoticon.

The ‘Padmaavat’ actor earlier treated his fans with a glimpse of his childhood when he posted an old picture with his elder sister on Raksha Bandhan.

Not only has he won over hearts with his looks, but his talent too. His February release ‘Gully Boy‘ proved his prowess not only as an actor but also as a rapper and since then he feels that Hindustani rap has arrived in the country.

“The time of Hindustani rap/hip hop has come and this is the much-needed explosion in the music scene of India. These are exciting times for original music in India and rap/hip-hop is a huge refresher. Hindustani rap/hip hop is no longer an underground music scene. It has become the language of the youth and it is the biggest thing happening in Indian culture today,” Ranveer said recently.

BMW bets on India with latest 3 Series sedan, prices start at Rs 41.5 lakh

BMW 3 Series

Just three weeks after taking over, BMW Group India’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President Rudratej Singh launched the seventh generation model of the company’s latest 3 Series sedan.

The car generates around a third of its annual sales and is the company’s flagship product. Available in three variants across diesel and petrol engines, the ex-showroom prices of the sedan start at Rs 41,50,000 and go up to Rs 48,00,000. In 2009, the 3 Series range was launched at an ex-show room price of Rs 24,00,000 to Rs 25,00,000. Singh says he doesn’t expect duties to come down anytime soon. Also, BMW does not see the current downturn in the auto segment impacting its plans in any way.

So, is this the best time to launch an expensive car? Singh thinks it is, because new cars like the 3 Series will be even costlier in March 2020 when BSVI norms kick in. “We are committed to this market for the long term, and understand that for growth in India, there will be short-term hiccups,” he said.

The automobile manufacturer is also looking to expand distribution by opening three new dealerships in the coming months.

According to analysts, the steep jump in prices have been a result of high customs duty, excise, goods and services tax (GST), as well as price increases by manufacturers on the back of input costs of steel and rubber, among others.
